This mature, nuanced performance of Berlin communicates the human tragedy of the story, leaving behind the chilliness of the studio and using the medium of the stage to its full dramatic advantage.

  2. 8.0 |   Rolling Stone

Upon the 1973 release of Berlin, a Rolling Stone critic deemed the record ""patently offensive."" Thirty years later, Lou Reed's concept album.. ranked 344 on this magazine's 500 all-time-greatest-albums list.

  3. 8.0 |   The Quietus

If you haven't heard the original album, either version is equally essential, but the sheer power of the performances.. make this the one to go for. If you already know Berlin, then you already know whether you're ready for another crawl through sewers or not.

  4. 7.2 |   Pitchfork

It's a miracle Reed was able to turn one of the most hermetic albums of all time into a communal experience, but Live at St. Ann's was also a one-time-only slight of hand: Berlin will forever be a record best enjoyed alone.

  5. 7.0 |   No Ripcord

  6. 5.0 |   PopMatters

Berlin as it’s performed here just doesn’t sound harrowing anymore—it simply sounds like a concert where people are enjoying themselves and yelling “Loouuuu!” between songs. The overheated production and occasional guitar wankery contribute to the mood-destroying as well.
