  1. 9.0 |   Drowned In Sound

Listening to the 11-minute closer, ‘Killer Parties’, it becomes absolutely clear what The Hold Steady do that no-one else in the world really does.

  2. 8.0 |   PopMatters

The Hold Steady aren’t trying to surprise their listeners. They’re not looking to pull off any grand illusions. They just want to play good music and connect with their fans.

  3. 8.0 |   The Quietus

Listening to A Positive Rage takes me back to Upper Street, Islington, circa 1978, where I would find myself en route to the Hope and Anchor to catch a slab of wild, carefree pub rock — not terribly chic, but then neither are The Hold Steady in the scheme of things. So, gloriously, they buck all manner of trend.

  4. 8.0 |   The Sunday Times

When Craig Finn tells the audience, partway through an incendiary Killer Parties, that “there is so much joy in what we do up here”, he pretty much nails it on the head.

  5. 6.0 |   Uncut

Live album focuses on the band’s first three records, capturing a time when Boys And Girls In America turned them from insider darlings into a bona fide rock phenomenon.

  6. 6.0 |   The Independent

An exhilarating show in front of an obviously partisan Chicago audience, the group blasting away hell for leather.

  7. 6.0 |   Pitchfork

The Hold Steady are taking the success they chart here and asserting themselves a must-see live act, for any audience. More power to them- but A Positive Rage isn't much of an opening gambit
