Some of the year's most welcoming music - accessible, consistently tuneful and devoid of patience-testing filler.

A pleasant return to the days of C-86/indie-pop

Time To Die is an album which complements perfectly other recent 'marquee' releases such as the Fleet Foxes' debut and Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest. It'll also complement perfectly the most mundane daily activity: your commute may never be the same again. This is, truly, an album worthy of obsession

  4. 7.1 |   Pitchfork

It's hard to envision Time to Die slowing the momentum of the Dodos' ascendance ... but Time to Die comes off like a temporary decision to forgo made them lovable, flaws and all, and stress what makes them likeable.

  5. 7.0 |   The Observer

Be prepared for acoustic-led songs that take circuitous routes, with warm vocal lines and absorbing instrumental digressions along the way

  6. 6.0 |   The Scotsman

Shares common ground with the euphoric sounds of fellow indie Statesiders The Shins and Fleet Foxes… starts to sound pretty repetitive from around the half-way point on

They are far too talented to be written off after one less-than-stellar effort. The difference between the ho-hum effort of Time To Die and the bristling energy emanating from its predecessor is a fine divide — one I’ll lay odds the Dodos will have conquered before the next go-round

  10. 5.0 |   NME

Why did The Dodos make this record? Judging by the opacity of the lyrics, it’s not as if they had anything they were burning to tell the world and it’s not like the melodies are gushing out of them like waterfalls. ‘Time To Die’ doesn’t even sound like it was much fun to make. No, they made it because they could and the complacent sentinels of US indie rock let them.

  11. 5.0 |   No Ripcord

A startlingly streamlined affair that passes without leaving much of a mark.

  13. 4.0 |   PopMatters

It’s humourless, sexless, and worst of all for indie rock, just plain dull. If you value consistency in favour of innovation, these might be the songs for you.
